Paladin New Holy Spells in WotLK

This is part one of a 3-part post about the new Paladin spells coming in WotLK.

HOLY

  • Enlightened Judgments, Requires 40 points in Holy
Increases the range of your Judgment spells by 10/20 yards

This is actually nice. Paladins can now judge seals from a save distance during fights but you have to strike the mob/boss to refresh the seal. I don’t see holy paladins running up to the mob/boss to refresh a seal or re-judging the seal often. Maybe in dire straits.

However it is helpful in PVP situations (i.e. Shockadins)

  • Blessed Hands, Requires 20 points in Holy, Instant cast
Reduces the mana cost and increases the resistances to Dispel effect of all Hand spells by 15/30%

Nice PVP talent especially using along with Hand of Freedom

  • Infusion of Light, Requires 1 point in Holy Shock, requires 25 points in Holy
Your Holy Shock critical hits reduce the cast time of your next Holy Light spell by 1.3/2.5 secs (Update).

I’m kinda mixed on this one. Holy Shock is better by its cooldown reduced to 6 sec however I haven’t seen if the mana cost to use Holy Shock changed. As you may know Holy Shock uses a moderate amount of mana but with a 15 sec cool-down the mana consumption is fair and manageable. With the cooldown lowered to 6 sec and no change to the mana cost, your mana consumption has been increased and you can potentially use an enormous amount of mana trying to get Infusion of Light to proc and then using Holy Light. Illumination will soften the hit to your mana especially when you Divine Favor before casting Holy Light but I don’t see Holy Shock being used as a healing spell as often as some may think to get the benefit of Infusion of Light.

I’m not saying the spell is bad, quite frankly it isn’t. It actually gives another instant cast heal which paladins need. However the spell is limited to when you need to use it as oppose to use it when it proc so you have to constantly use Holy Shock to benefit from it. If you have a lot of spell crit this may not be a big issue but some don’t. They normally have +spell damage and Mp5, which will become difficult to utilize Infusion of Light.

Personally I believe this spell is suited in the PVP element were a Shockadin survivability just skyrocketed. Think about it, having an instant cast heal using your biggest heal in the battlegrounds/arena plus I don’t see a cooldown for Infusion of Light after it proc. That is overpowered.

I’m thinking Infusion of Light will be nerfed before WotLK. If so, I don’t see many will spec in it.

  • Sacred Cleansing, Requires 40 points in Holy
Your Cleanse spell has a 10/20/30% chance to increase the target’s resistance to Disease, Magic and Poison by 30% for 10 sec.

Nice, a helpful resistance when you cleanse someone or yourself.

  • Judgements of the Pure, Requires 45 points in Holy, Duration 30 seconds, Instant castCasting and melee speed increased by 2/4/6/8/10% for 30 seconds.

A built-in haste, not bad. I’m curious if this spell stacks with Light’s Grace since it last for 30 seconds.

  • Beacon of Light, Requires 50 points in Holy talents, 40 yard range, 1.5 sec cast
The target becomes a Beacon of Light, healing all party or raid members within 10 yards for 990/1120/1280/1725/2000 over 15 sec.

Rank 2: Requires level 65, 945 mana, heals for 1120
Rank 3: Requires level 70, 1040 mana, heals for 1280
Rank 4: Requires level 75, 1970 mana, heals for 1725
Rank 5: Requires level 80, 2330 mana, heals for 2000

Let me start by saying I like this spell and by far the best spell Blizzard implemented for the Paladin class. It provides an AoE heal which Paladins need and it generates threat per each heal to the person that becomes a Beacon of Light.

This spell is very powerful but extremely limited because I don’t see you using this spell on any class other than the tank. Also the amount of mana you need to cast it (2330 mana, rank 5) is more than a rank 13 Holy Light (1880 Mana) and heals far less. I can only see this spell used on the main tank to help top off the heals and to help sustain aggro.

  • Hand of Purity
Holy Provides preemptive reactive healing on the target.

This spell was mentioned at World Wide Invitational during the Q & A sessions with some of Blizzards developers. It has been mentioned this spell will be similar to the priest’s Prayer of Mending. There isn’t much mentioned but I am hoping Blizzard follows through and implements the spell.

Overall I like the changes but I see most of the new spells suited for PVP/DPS than healing

About that Beacon of Light spell. If it’s a HoT, does it get the full benefit of +healing? If so, the max rank spell for a pally with +2k healing would be 4000 over 15 seconds, or 800 per tick if it’s a 3 second tick. It affects the whole raid, but has limited range, so it has massive implications in a fight like void reaver, especially since it’s not a channeled spell. Unless there’s a severe downranking penatly for this spell, level 65 with high +healing might be very attractive. Also, any idea if this spell can crit? Will be ever cooler if it does (think illumination and divine favor here). Anyways, food for thought…I know it’s way too early to know for sure.

Its not a channeled spell, and it does recieve 100% coef. from +Healing, so if you have 2000 healing, it will heal for 4000. Not really a big deal, but you’re missing the point. You don’t heal the target, the Target BECOMES a beacon of light, healing everyone around them. Healing creates threat at the rate of .5 per point of healing, so if you heal a warrior with this spell, he just healed for 4000 and generated 2000 threat over 15 seconds. However, if, for some miraculous reason, the entire raid was in range for the that spell, he would heal for 100,000 (25 raid members x 4000 healing to each) which would equate to 50,000 threat. And thats just with a warrior. If it was a Tankadin, the math would look something like this:

(100,000 x .5) x 1.9 (Righteous Fury) = 95,000 threat. With the mana cost on this spell, no its’ not spammable, but there are fights that this spell rocks on – Hex Lord and Na’Jentus come to mind most readily. Also, dropping it on your pally tank in MtH at the start of every trash group gives him even more threat, especially with all the melee standing right behind him…

hey do u gys know if u can cast it on ur self cause if u can just get 4 pallies and run around certain areas and aoe heal guild

im sorry but i have to dissagre about the spell Infusion of Light. because for example any paladin can get it a holy shock a 100% crit with divin favor and then they use holy shock and its a 100% crit . which means they get infusion of light.

i know that u can be using holy shock all the time to keep trying to get infusion of light but when theres like an imergency like in a raid or dongeon the tank is really low hp and u dont have enough time to cast a heal u can use

(divine favor) (holy shock) and then u get infusion of light and u use (holy light) which basikly heals him back to most of his health in 2 seconds. thats the reason why it wont get nerfed 🙂

A holy crit build pally will have a minimum of 30% crit rate on their holy spells. If properly teamed up with other classes, you can push that up to and over 40% (with an elem shammy and boomkin). Team that up with a shadow priest and holy eternal mana batman! I have a feeling that they’re trying to make pallies into into stronger single target healers, which is nice. They may also be thinking about turning us into a melee class again that can do isntant heals. For example, you could be meleeing to keep your judgement up then casting an offensive holy shock, which crits then you slap an instant holy light on your tank. 30% offensive/70% defensive, basically doing it all at once. That sounds like fun!! Gosh, imagine the PvP implications of hitting someone for more than 1k crit and then insta-casting a 4k (or higher if it crits) heal on yourself. I’m thinking it will get nerfed somehow.

Leykis, any holy paladin with 2k+ healing has enought spelldamage to burst someone for over 5k damage (if all crit ofc).

I had a 5vs5 arena team with 5 holy paladins, we just heal ourselves and burst 1 target down for each cooldown, love seeing full S4 warriors charge us and getting burst down in 2 secs

  7. 7 Leykis September 2, 2008 at 1:45 pm

How would you burst for 5k in 2 seconds? I can’t imagine Holy Shock or Judgement of Righteousness critting for more than 2k each? Regardless, I’d have liked to have seen that. I’m mostly a PvE person myself, having been burned out by not getting much support as a holy pally in arena play.

Also a good combo if tank is reaally low on hp is divin favor, holy, shock it will proc infusion of light and then almost instant FoL what I use if tank is down al of hp

OKay, ou guys have Beacon of light all wrong… U put a beacon of light on the MT. if their is raid damage, you can heal one party / raid member who is damaged for 2k. It will also heal the MT for 2k.

    Tank gets beacon.
    Tank gets hit for 2k
    Raid gets hit for 3k
HPally heals member of raid for 3k.
Beacon heals Tank for 3k (1000 overhealing)

    • 11 Vampyre July 6, 2009 at 9:59 pm

Beacon does not tranfer overhealing at this time. this will change in 3.2 but for now it tank tanks 2k raid meber get 3k damage. pally heals member for 3k tank gets healed for 2k no over healing. basicly if tank is tanking more damage than raid no matter what the type of heal used only the effective healing will go to the beacon.
